MOOD: When inspiration suddenly hits you which comes first the melody or the lyrics?

AJ Mitchell: When inspiration comes to me it really just depends. Sometimes a melody will pop in my head. Sometimes a lyric will come first. Sometimes I'll be walking down the street and a melody will come in my head and I pick up my phone, go in voice memos, and just put down the melody. Sometimes someone will be saying something, and maybe we talk about a situation where they say a cool word or I say a cool word, and I’m like oh that'd be cool to write about. So, it really just depends on the Situation.

MOOD: What do you consider to be growth in your artistry?

AJ Mitchell: I think growth to me is staying true to myself by being the most honest version of myself while also growing as an artist. I would like for my music to speak for me rather than anything like play counts or views. It's easy to get caught up in the numbers along the way, but at the end of the day, I'd like to be remembered for my music.

MOOD: Do you have any particular advice that you've received or experiences you've gone through this past year that has made you grow or mature as an artist?

AJ Mitchell: I’ve been so busy these last few years on the road that I only recently realized I've barely ever had any time for myself. Don't get me wrong I love what I do, but after being away from home for several months I realized that I forgot to take a deep breath every once and awhile. Being an artist can be non-stop with no days off. From shows to promo to recording and writing new music, I don't think I had a day off since last year. Luckily realizing all of this has been half the battle, and now I'm starting to take a little bit of time off when I can
