MOOD Fashion News: Lupita Nyong'o is Chanel's Newest Ambassador

Chanel unveiled its flight-inspired spring 2025 collection Tuesday in a star-studded runway show at the restored Grand Palais—marking the house’s return to the iconic venue for the first time in four years. Actress Lupita Nyong’o sat in the front row for the feathery fashion affair alongside fellow style stars Naomi Campbell, Jennie, and Margaret Qualley. As a longtime friend of the house, it was no surprise that Nyong’o was in attendance—but her presence held extra significance this time. After the show, WWD exclusively reported that Chanel has named Nyong’o its latest global brand ambassador.

Nyong’o confirmed the news on her Instagram account. She shared her joy about the announcement in a post made late Oct. 1. “I am deeply honored to share that I am now a global brand ambassador for the House of Chanel,” the Oscar winner wrote, adding, “It was wonderful to attend their Spring-Summer 2025 Ready-to-Wear show at the Grand Palais today. Merci beaucoup, @chanelofficial!”

Her history with Chanel is a fashionable one. The “A Quiet Place: Day One” star has worn the brand as early as 2013 when she first swept onto the scene with her Academy-Award-winning performance in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years A Slave.” Her standout Chanel looks over the years include a classic pink tweed dress worn to a 2014 pre-BAFTA party and an ethereal two-tiered lace gown worn to the 2023 Academy Museum Gala. And Nyong’o is in good company: other Chanel ambassadors include Margot Robbie, Kristen Stewart, Tilda Swinton, Penélope Cruz, and Lily-Rose Depp.

Speaking to the Associated Press, the acclaimed actress, podcaster, and author highlighted the impact she hopes to have in her new role. “I feel like these movements that Chanel is making are part of declaring a desire to represent a more realistic world,” she explained to the publication. “And I’m proud to be one of those faces sending that message.” She cited the tireless efforts of model and activist Bethann Hardison to diversify the fashion industry in the 1960s and 1970s as an inspiration.

Besides Nyong’o’s ambassadorship, there were a few other surprises at Chanel’s soaring show held on the last day of Paris Fashion Week. A giant, empty bird cage nearly scraped the Palais’s glass ceiling—a symbolic set piece worthy of the collection, which paid tribute to female aviators, writers, and other women who liberated themselves from society’s trappings throughout history. Mid-show, actress and Chanel ambassador Riley Keough performed Prince’s “When Doves Cry” from a perch-like swing, her sweet serenade floating down from above.

However, fashion fans hoping the illustrious Parisian house would reveal a new creative director were left in suspense. One thing’s for sure: whoever succeeds Virginie Viard will have a stacked roster of stunning talent to dress.
