MOOD Music: New Releases to Know Now (11/8)

Updated: Nov 18

After several weeks overflowing with new releases, the music tides slowed down this past week. Still, a few promising new releases splashed onto the scene—and they’re not to be overlooked. The new songs to have on your radar this week all come from English artists.

Today, burgeoning talent Griff dropped a shimmery, empowering pop anthem titled “Last Night’s Mascara” that you’re bound to have on loop this weekend. Earlier this week (Nov. 3, her 30th birthday), R&B darling Ella Mai gave fans a present with mini-EP ‘3,’ featuring the hopelessly romantic track “Little Things.” Finally, Cairo-born, London-raised newcomer Jana Diab brought ‘00s vibes and introspective feel on “9 Lives,” a new track from her extended debut EP ‘Season One.’ Read on for all the info on the trio of artists from across the pond that should be on your playlists right now.

“Last night’s mascara” - Griff

It’s been a big year for Griff. The English singer-songwriter dropped her debut studio album, ‘Vertigo,’ in July and was an opener on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. For those who have been following the singer-songwriter since her sparkling 2019 debut ‘Mirror Talk,’ however, this year is just the natural progression for one of pop’s most singular talents. New single “last night’s mascara” has the makings of a potential hit; the buoyant track captures an unapologetic, post-regret energy in the same vein as Chappell Roan’s 2020 slow-burn success “Pink Pony Club.” Blotting off the streaks of watery mascara, Griff is reborn in the addictive chorus: “Mm, would you look at me now?” she sings, inviting all eyes on her. She’s more than earned them.

“Little Things” - Ella Mai

Forget all those love songs about grand romantic gestures. Ella Mai’s new track is about cherishing the “Little Things”: a breakfast cooked by someone you love, a movie night in, and a heartfelt thank-you. In its tribute to love’s unnoticed moments, “Little Things” proves these can be just as meaningful as the major milestones. Mai’s silky vocals detail all the little things she does for her partner, down to putting “Love notes for when you on the road” in his Louis tote. The intimate R&B song is a melodic ode to a relationship worth appreciating—and a pleasant treat for the English artist’s fans, released as part of a surprise three-song EP called ‘3’ on Mai’s 30th birthday.

“9 Lives” - Jana Diab

Jana Diab’s music could belong to any of those noughties film classics—Sleepover, Mean Girls, The Princess Diaries—floating in between the scenes when the main characters fight and when they reconcile. “9 Lives,” one of the new tracks from the extended version of the emerging artist’s debut EP ‘Season One,’ is the latest example of Diab’s uncanny ability to plug listeners into a relatable moody state of mind. The R&B-laced pop song sees the singer meditating on flaws with candid acceptance. “Nine lives, wasted on me/ I treat life like it owes me something,” she declares in the song’s airy chorus. The refreshing track is sure to resonate with listeners who are going through it—reassuring them that it’s okay to be perfectly imperfect.
