He is the founder of Off-White and creative director for Kanye West and now the new artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear. In case you didn’t know, that man is Virgil Abloh. The announcement was made early Monday, making him the first African American creative director and one of the few black designers at the top of a French fashion house.
Abloh was raised in Illinois and is the son of Ghanian immigrants. Although, he studied architecture and Civil Engineering he’s made his mark in fashion. In 2013, he launched his own streetwear line, Off-White. In 2015, he was a finalist for the LMVH Young Designers’ Prize. Abloh obtained a Grammy nomination for his work on Jay-Z’s and West’s album, Watch the Throne.
It seems that Louis Vuitton is headed for a new direction, possibly more designs marketed towards the new generation. In a statement published by the brand, Abloh said, “It is and honor for me to accept the position of Men’s Artisitc Director for Louis Vuitton.” He continued, “I find the heritage and creative integrity of the house are key inspirations and will look to reference them both while drawing parallels to modern times.”
Kim Kardashian West, Diddy and Hailey Baldwin were a few celebrities to congratulate Abloh via social media.
