Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Honor Princess Diana at their Royal Wedding

May 22, 2018

Over the weekend Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex married Meghan Markle in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Even though his mother, Princess Diana of Wales wasn’t present, Harry found ways to honor her on his special day.

In the entrance there was an archway of Diana’s favorite flowers, white peonies and white roses. The flowers were planted in Kensington Palace’s White Garden on the 20th anniversary of her death.
Meghan included Forget-Me-Nots in her bouquet, another one of Diana’s favorite flowers. The day before the wedding Prince Harry hand-picked flowers for the bouquet from their private garden in Kensington Palace.

Meghan had a dramatic veil that resembled the long veil that Diana wore for her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981.

Diana’s siblings were present, Charles Spencer, Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale. Since Diana’s death, Fellowes rarely makes public appearances but Harry asked his aunt to give the only reading at the ceremony to which she agreed and made it much more meaningful.

In the service, the royal couple included the hymn “Guide Me, O Thy Great Redeemer”, the same hymn was sung at Diana’s funeral.

Meghan wore Diana’s aquamarine ring to their evening reception. The ring may be a gift from Harry since his mother left her sons  jewelry to be gifted to or be used by their wives. In a letter of wishes, Diana stated, “I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it.”

Elton John who performed “Candle in the Wind” at Diana’s funeral in 1997, also performed at the luncheon following the wedding ceremony at Prince Harry’s request.

Instead of wedding presents, the couple asked that charitable donations be made to organizations they had chosen. Two of the charities, the Children’s HIV Association (CHIVA) and Crisis are devoted causes that were important to Diana.

Prince Harry is the younger son of Diana. She would have been happy to see him walk down the aisle. Harry had previously shared his thoughts about Meghan and his mother, "Oh they'd be thick as thieves, without question, I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know so excited for me, but then, as I said, would have probably been best friends - best friends with Meghan.”
