The BET Awards ceremony took place Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Jaime Fox hosted the awards this year. He surprised the audience when he called actor Michael B Jordan from the film, “Black Panther” to the stage. Jordan recited, “Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, cause they knew death was better than bondage”, a known line from the film. This year’s performance line up included artists J. Cole, Snoop Dogg, Migos. Nicki Minaj, YG, Meek Mills, Miguel, Ella Mai and more. J. Cole’s performance was one of the most memorable. He sang “Friends” from his latest KOD album with Daniel Caesar and Wale. Towards the end of the song the lights shined on children meditating in formation. Nicki Minaj performed her hit single “Chun-Li” and her collaboration song with Lil Wayne, “Rich Sex”. Meek Mills released his new single “Stay Woke” explaining about inequality in the Justice System. Rapper Kendrick Lamar took the most prizes home. He received the awards for Best Male Hip Hop Artist and Album of the Year for “DAMN”. Beyonce won Female R&B/Pop Artist. Bruno Mars won Best Male R&B/Pop Artist. Migos won the Best Group award. Cardi B won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist SZA received the Best New Artist Award. Drake won the award for Video of the Year with “God’s Plan” and Ryan Coogler’s film “Black Panther” took home the Best Movie Award. Congratulation to the artists who received awards this year!
